Starting in 2012, Free Lunch has a NEW STRIP called Á LA CARTOONS! This strip occurs weekly on Fridays (I can\'t think of a better way to jump start the weekend).

Ted Glanzer is the editor for the Granby, CT (the home of Free Lunch Studios) edition of Patch.com. The guys at Free Lunch saw more and more of Ted due to arts events around town and the studio. Once Ted discovered that Free Lunch was already doing strips, the rest fell into place.

Comic Book Shuffle 4 winners!

The masses gathered at Cliff's Con in Plainville, CT to judge Free Lunch Studios 4th Comic Book Shuffle. In the closest voting result that we've ever had, the winners by a narrow margin were Pete Colapietro and Emma Ort! Everyone that participated in the Shuffle competition will, as always be published but the winning team will get the cover honor and a feature next to their story in the next Shuffle book. Matt Ryan, creator of Monster Labs, will teach a new special creature creation workshop for all ages that runs from 11 am until 2 pm! Who will have the scariest? Who made most disgusting? Artists! Free Lunch Studios is holding an Gallery Show called "Something Scary!"
We seek your interpretation of "Something Scary" for a Halloween themed display and consignment sales. Details below!

Eligibility: Free Lunch Comics is looking for imaginative, creative artists, painters, illustrators, collage artists, and others to participate in our Gallery 2011, "Something Scary".

Opening & Awards Reception: Monday, October 31st from 6-9 p.m. All entry artists are encouraged to attend the show.

Submissions: You can submit paintings, collage, mixed media, and drawings. All work submitted must be framed with mechanics ready to hang or mount for display.

Size Limits: None

Delivery: Call 860-305-6621 to arrange delivery options.

Notifications: Will occur by email or Facebook.

Return: Artist will be notified when to pick up their declined work. Accepted, unsold work must be picked up on November 26th - 27th.

Requirements: Artisits whose work is selected must meet the following requirements:

The Comic Book Shuffle results are IN. With a record breaking turnout for the Plainville Cliffs Con and massive amount of votes, the third place winners were Mike Finger and Keith Murphey for "Last Call". Greg Lallman and Hector Rodriguez grabbed second place for, "Untitled" leaving Chris Wrann and James Rodriguez to take first place with, "Dead Zone".

The Comic Book Shuffle 2 "Secrets" also made its debut this weekend at the Shuffle Event at Free Lunch Studios and the Plainville Cliffs Con.

Comic Strip Art Gallery

Free Lunch Studios in Granby, CT is pleased to present a gallery of the private collection of comic strip art of Brad Gilchrist. Mr. Gilchrist is a long-time writer and artist of comic strips including The Muppets, Nancy, and The Rock Channel. The collection features original strips from such features as Garfield, Broom Hilda, Zits, and others. The display will feature approximately 30 strips and sketches.

The gallery opening will occur at the Free Lunch Studios at 6 PM on Thursday, April 7, 2011. The exhibit will remain open for viewing for the period of a month. Free Lunch Studios is located at 518 Salmon Brook St. (rear entrance) Granby, CT 06035. Please call Steve Kanaras at 860-810-4927 for hours and availability for viewing.

Maine Comics Arts Fest

Ultra rare book, loaned to Free Lunch

A local Connecticut cartoonist was kind enough dive into his vault to dig out and loan us here at Free Lunch Studios, TWO ultra rare, original editions of The Famous Artists Cartoon Course manuals. These beauties are chock full of awesome stuff including the talents of Milton Caniff, Rube Goldberg and more! You can come by and take a supervised gander at these gems on Monday nights during the weekly jam sessions (see www.freelunchstudios.com for more info). Comic Book Shuffle!

Free Lunch Studios will be hosting it's first ever COMIC BOOK SHUFFLE! This is a awesome two part challenge for writers and artists. The first part will take place at the Free Lunch Studios office in Granby CT on March 27th. There the creators will be randomly matched up and compete to try to complete a 5 page story in 6 HOURS! The second part will take place the following day at the Cliff's Con in Plainville CT where the works will be judged by the people attending the show. Every attendee of the show will receive one vote that they can cast for their favorite team-up/story. The winning team will be awarded with a number of honors and one voter will win a great prize just for voting!

Hosting this competition are Steve Kanaras, creator and writer of Only in Whispers and Matt Ryan, artist from Only in Whispers and Bigger.

Cliff's has his first show of the new year this Sunday(January 31st) and he is proud to present Free Lunch Comics release of the new SKY PIRATES OF VALENDOR TRADEPAPERBACK!

Free Lunch hosted its first Black Friday Comic Fest

Free Lunch hosted its first Black Friday Comic Fest on November 27th. Participants came to learn about graphic storytelling and to apply it to their own comic story or strip...but there was a catch...instead of drawing out panels, they used sticky notes! This idea was borrowed from our friends at Cartoonists Conspiracy. This fun event lasted 2+ hours and was well attended by people young and old. A workshop that will definitely be conducted again.

An amazing turnout for King of the Monster Mountain this Halloween! The Free Lunch Studios office WAS PACKED! There were 15 competitors of all ages and just as many spectators! The King of the Mountain ended with an epic battle between Brandon and Mike's monsters, leaving Brandon atop Monster Mountain. He ended up winning a T-shirt featuring this very pic with his beastie on it! Congrats Brandon!

Granby Open Studio Tour!

Every October, the Granby Artists open their studio doors to the public. This year Free Lunch Studios made its debut. All weekend, people came to Free Lunch to see what was going on behind its doors. Matt and Steve took turns running workshops each day for people to observe. We want to thank everyone that stopped by and we hope to see you all again!

Free Lunch Studios hosts 24 Hour Comic Day

A gathering of dedicated indy comic artists gathered at the Free Lunch Studios office to venture on the difficult quest of completing the 24 Hour Comic Challenge on Saturday, October 3rd. Steven Kuster checked in regularly on the group throughout the challenge. Everyone started at 12 noon on Saturday and all the participants were done by 11 am the next day. The youngest challengers were two high schoolers, Lizzy Tramonti and Jessica Mathis. Others involved were, Keith Murphey, Albert Luciano, along with hosts Matt Ryan and Steve Kanaras. Sue and Everett Soares were there to support and encourage all the participants. A good time was had by all and everyone is already looking towards next year.

Free Lunch Jam Team makes a difference!

Pictured here are the pieces submitted by the Free Lunch Studios Weekly Jam members for Wonder Woman Day! Every Monday night, Free Lunch opens its doors to welcome artists and writers to network, draw and write. The artists came together for a group submission to donate for a cause that brings awareness and support to victims of domestic violence. On Monday September 15th, the Free Lunch Studios Monday Night Jammers started drawing their contributions for Wonder Woman Day 4. In past years, Wonder Woman Day I-III has raised over $69,000 for Domestic Violence Shelters and Crisis Lines in Portland, Oregon and Flemington, NJ. Monday September 21st, all the pieces were collected from David Davies, Yuko Salvadori, Norman Katz, Chris Jennison, James Rodriguez and Matt Ryan to donate to the cause.
